Irreversible (Gaspar Noe, 2002)

According to Wikipedia around 200 people walked out of the screening of Irreversible at Cannes. A Greek website posted on Facebook a video with first reactions from the audience... For the life of me it was so fucking funny to watch all these prudes and conservatives utterly furious about the movie and with Gaspar. And when I say funny I mean it. It was pathetically funny to watch all these people bombarding the movie, just because it was a cruel and violent film. Fact is that didn't get anything from the film nor did they understood why this movie is so appalling to watch. And they didn't get anything from the movie because they didn't care to look for anything in there. The only things that they had to say were "pathetic!", " horrible!", "devastating!" and other equally empty words.
Irreversible is a movie that dared, that is a fact. A movie that dared to picture the act of rape in all its glorious horridness. Because the act of rape is probably the worst thing that you can do to a person. I sometimes think that is worse than murder. So Gaspar made it clear that the audience will get the full "dish" served. A rape scene, single shot with a steady camera, that looks and feels like the most terrible and disgusting thing that you have seen in your life. And that's exactly how it should be pictured the act of rape if you ask me. But beyond that scene the movie has many other things to offer. It has a delirious scene in the beginning ending in one of the most violent scenes I have seen in my life and afterwards, as a last sequence, it features the intimate moments of the couple pictured which are incredibly realistic and destructively truthful if you take in account what would follow. Irreversible is a movie that by all means is not for every occasion, but it's a fearless, bold, bleak and daring art drama that should be praised for its qualities and not trashed by some idiots who didn't see anything that the movie had to offer.
