Take This Waltz (Sarah Polley, 2011)

There are movies out there that with the first glance might look simple, but in truth they are anything but that. And of course these movies tend to be the exception to the rule which says that most of the movies are simply superficial. Movies that go deeper than the surface also tend to be poorly understood. Most people want their comment as clear as the smelly fart and beyond that they don't seem to get anything. Movies that use a story to communicate something more complex and brainy than the average "love conquers all" or "drugs are bad" or even "war is destructive" are doomed to moderate success and that is best case scenario. Sadly most people are not interested at all for the comment in a movie they just want to swallow their popcorn and have something playing on the screen as a distraction. Franchises and endless sequels have conquered the movie industry and most of the them, if not all, are garbage and I'm been nice here. Indie, small productions that want to open a dialogue with the audience are the joke of the month and the people who are involved in those movies are doing it for the love of art and not because they are expecting to become financially satisfied. I, on the other hand, try in this bombarding of bullshit that we are living to balance between substance and fun. Not an easy fucking task, I must say.
This movie by Sarah Polley is on first glance a love story, but in a more thorough reading is a study upon desire and what do I want from life. I decided not to tell you anything about the premise of the movie, because I believe that the less you know about what's going to happen, the more you'll tune with the comment of the movie. I can say though that I found the movie incredibly mature, clear to its comment and very accurately presented. It remind me of another movie that has to do with desire the highly underrated drama The Escape with Gemma Arterton. Both movies use the story (a simple story in both films) to make a substantial comment about what is real and what is fake, phony and false in our lives. You see most people won't get the comment of these movies, because it doesn't suit them to get it, because they are victims of that phoniness and lie. They will probably understand what the film is trying to say, but they will pass it like nothing important was said. Their defensive mechanism will do destructive miracles once more. I recommend those two films without the slightest hesitation.
