12 Monkeys (Terry Gilliam, 1995)

12 Monkeys is such a full film, such a complete movie that whenever you watch it you feel that you haven't seen it all, you haven't seen enough of it. And that effect is due to the truly stupendous atmosphere that it has. That decaying, claustrophobic, demented atmosphere that seems to create an effect to the spectator of making him lose his compass. Yes 12 Monkeys is deliberately a very disorienting movie. It makes you feel that you are lost in that time travel and you don't know where to begin. Is it now that the world has been destroyed or is it the past? That question that seems to hover above your head, as you are watching that lunatic movie where everything has a sick, foul taste, makes you really question your taste about things and finally makes you truly doubt your own senses. 12 Monkeys is one of the greatest science fiction movies that exist due to the fact that it is making you feel things that are totally hostile to you. It makes you get in a mood that is rather gloomy and disappointing. It makes you believe that there is no hope for humanity and that the only things that thrive are hostility and evilness. Who is the crazy in that story no on knows. Who is the one that has lost any sense of his humanity is also blurred and unidentified. The only thing that you get for sure is a feeling of utter despair, a bitter, horrible taste in your mouth for that kind of apocalypse, that virus that has destroyed humanity, leaving behind very few that live under horrible, truly terrible circumstances.
