Brick (Rian Johnson, 2005)

Well Brick is a strange and special movie. And it's not those things just because it is an eccentric and odd movie that takes a lot from the neo-noir mythology and delivers a truly interesting mystery movie, but it's also because Brick fails exactly where it succeeds. So yes, Brick is certainly of the movies that are not to be missed in any way and again somewhere near the end you find the experiment rather too tiresome. On one hand you feel thrilled that you are watching such an idiosyncratic movie and on the other you curse because you feel that boredom is knocking at your door. That unusal duality that you feel with that movie, makes it even more exciting I can say. No, the point is not to really get enthusiastic about the movie and announce it as one of your favorite movies, but to follow its odd path. That weird mishmash of neo-noir slang and mystery that works slower than a turtle, takes you to a place that no other movie has ever taken you. Yes, Brick is one of a kind and for that you need to treat it with caution. It will tire you, it will infuriate you at moments, but it's the truth that the things that you will earn from watching this movie are many more than the ones you will lose. Brick is a film that has no duplicate and for that it's worth all of your attention. Brick is the B side of mystery movies, the B side of neo-noir films, the B side of teen films and finally the B side of cinema in general. It's what assholes would throw in the garbage can and you as a pure cinephile would take it from the garbage can and put it next to the things that have astonished you and baffled you the most. Brick, eccentricity in its purest form.
