I know a lot of people who hate The Ninth Gate saying that it is Polanski's worst work. I seriously disagree with that opinion, I find it to be one of his most brilliant films. The Ninth Gate is a mystery thriller that really consumes you. From the first minute till the last one you feel that you are walking on a tightrope. This is definitely a rare thriller, a thriller that really captivates the viewer, making him to really hang from the plot of the movie and the brilliant mystery story that it builds. It's also obvious that Polanski unleashed all of his talent in order to make The Ninth Gate such a penetrating movie. There is no doubt that we are talking about a film that has the ability to really bewitch the spectator, to really put him in a terrible mood, in a mood where everything is hostile and you don't know who to trust and how. That superbly conceived inconvenience that the film creates, follows the spectator like a snake that is about to attack, making him constantly to feel threatened by the movie, to constantly feel that there is someone there who is messing with him pretty badly. Because if you think about it everyone in this movie dies. Wherever the protagonist goes, after a little time, death follows. And that death, that feeling of despair and panic that we all feel, is the key element, the key "figure" in the movie. Because The Ninth Gate is an unsettling movie, a movie that doesn't allow you to relax not even a second. And with ally the great visuals and edgy editing, The Ninth Gate is a highly atmospheric thriller that really makes you believe in... Satan. Beware where you are going you might be followed after you watch that film and know its secrets. So please, beware!
