Dolemite Is My Name (Craig Brewer, 2019)

Dolemite Is My Name is the best Eddie Murphy film in many, many years. It's not an exaggeration to say that this movie works like a resurrection for the actor. And also shows that Eddie Murphy is an extremely capable actor who can deliver wit, drama, vsiceral emotions and a sense of lighthearted seriousness. Dolemite Is My Name is really a terrific movie. It is funny when it has to be and dead serious when it needs. Apart from being a great movie though, Dolemite Is My Name is a great biographical piece, talking about a guy who is not the star of the week, who made everythin he was by himself, who turned the odds that were against him, who proved to be a fighter of life like very few are. And in that way Dolemite Is My Name is a film that it is even more important than your average biography for the highly successful star that we all know. Dolemite Is My Name tells the story of a real human being, of a human being with flaws and drowbacks. A human being who found his voice and talent after a long struggle. It's needless to say that the "rude and obscene" quality of the movie uplifts the film to a truly higher cause, that of teaching us how we are supposed to be and not how we are. Yes, because the movie apart from its biographical side has another side that looks like it wants to teach us something. And that something is nothing less than be yourself. Be yourself no matter how that comes out. Let out the things that trouble you or touch you. Be creative, try to do things. Everyone has a voice, the problem is that most people don't know what voice they have. So Dolemite Is My Name is that voice, that scream, that shout that our protagonist found and that leaves us with nothing less but to follow him and be creative, be obscene, be rude. Because these are heavenly qualities in life.
