There are many voices who have said that Eyes Wide Shut is the weakest film by Stanley Kubrick and a movie that misfires finally by trying very hard and achieving very little. I, without thinking it twice, believe that it's his best movie and a film that is simply irreplaceable. I saw for the first time Eyes Wide Shut when it came out and due to the fact that I was relatively young I didn't get its greatness. I saw it again at the age of 30 and I was totally blown away by its undeniable genius. Since then I have seen it numerous times and I still, get the same feeling. Awe in front of a movie that tried to picture the relationship, love and sex in the most brilliant, unorthodox and altogether mesmerizing way that I have seen in my life.
In Eyes Wide Shut is not only the uncountable details that hit you like a hammer in the head and make you admire the exquisiteness of the project, but is also the overall feeling of the movie that is like you are being transported to another earth really where things are so mysterious and weird that you find yourself totally exhilarated. The face of Tom Cruise in the taxi after he had learned about the other man from his wife, the inconceivable orgy in that scary mansion, the gazes between Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, the weed, the mystery, the suspense, the terror, the weirdness and the list is endless. An endless list of incredible moments in a movie that tried to explain the totally inexplicable. If there is only one movie that shows how emotion works, then this is the one.
